About

Isle of Wight pottery has been produced in the beautiful 'Garden Isle' for at least 5000 years, and it is believed that the first pots made date from the Neolithic period. Generally, Island pottery has followed mainland trends, and did not really come into its own until the twentieth century.

 'A Century of Ceramics'
 A selection of 20th century
 potters and potteries

 in the Isle of Wight

Published in 2005, this is the first book to be dedicated to Isle of Wight potters and potteries (text copyright Lisa Dowden). Twenty-seven twentieth century potters and potteries are the main feature of this book, which also gives a flavour of the period in which Island potters practised their craft — from HM Queen Victoria through the changing times of Isle of Wight pop festivals.

Contents also include ancient pottery — from the Neolithic period through the ages up to the twentieth century. It takes a look at pottery in Island schools, the college and elsewhere; and includes a comprehensive glossary of terms used in the book, location maps and a directory of some current Island potters.

There are over 350 black and white/colour images within the 256 gloss art pages, in full colour throughout. This 8.5 x 11 inch portrait book takes the reader on a journey through the twentieth century with a fascinating insight into the little-known history of this beautiful Island's wonderful variety of pottery.

The retail price of paperback books is £28 plus p&p (UK distribution only). To obtain further details contact Andrew and Lisa Dowden at Buttercup Cottage Books through 'Contact Us'.
